CAR & TRAILER (Category B+E) LICENCE
If you passed your car (Category B) driving test on or after 1st January 1997, you will have more limited entitlements to tow a trailer than if you passed your test before this date. The regulations are slightly complex and can be found at Car & Trailer Practical Driving Test (MAM = permissible maximum weight also known as Gross Vehicle Weight. Unladen Mass = vehicles own weight when not carrying any goods or burden inclusive of the body and all parts which are necessary to or ordinarily used with the vehicle when working on a road, exclusive of fuel. Kerb Weight is the nearest readily available figure but will often include the weight of fuel, driver and possibly a luggage element).

As an example, a Kia Sorento 4x4 has a Kerb Weight of 2065kg but, if you passed your car test on or after 1st January 1997, you can't tow a trailer with a MAM of 1435kg because the MAM of the Kia Sorento is 2640kg. You can only tow a trailer with a MAM of 860kg.

WILTSHIRE COUNCIL MOT TEST STATION

Concerned your car may fail it's MOT due to a garage wanting to generate business? If so, take your car to Wiltshire Council's MOT Station who will undertake MOT tests on cars owned by members of the Public. The benefit is they do not undertake repairs (you have 10 working days to undertake any repairs and there is no retest fee during this period)! Bookings by appointment (minimum one to two weeks notice but we recommend 29 days before your MOT expires so you have time to undertake repairs and the new MOT period will commmence on the date your current MOT expires provided you take the current MOT Certificate). They charge the standard MOT test fee.
